Start with a starter, and make it simple and easy.

Good morning everyone! Today, I am thinking about sourdough starter and how simple and easy Accidental Homesteader dry sourdough is to use. I also know that sometimes it takes a leap to start the process going. Baking bread can seem overwhelming and unattainable. My bread baking journey really started before I could walk or talk. My mother made bread to nourish her family since before I could remember. I started baking independently at age nine when I took a bread project in 4-H and won first place in the county. My sourdough journey has had fits and starts. Through the years, friends have given me sourdough starters and I tried. I just couldn't figure out the mysterious process. A co worker of my husband even gave me his grandmother's starter about five years ago. I tried and it just was overwhelming, the directions were too complicated to sustain. It was another part of my sour dough learning experience.

Two years ago, my best friend and neighbor, Nina, gave me a starter that she had made with internet directions. I really didn't think it would be any different than my tries before. Maybe it was the middle of the pandemic, the food shortage panic, shear determination or just boredom being stuck at home. I made it work, simplified and demystified the process. I missed steps and parts of the process but keep going. I forgot it in the back of the refrigerator and kept going. I had successes and failures and I kept going. I tried, noodles, fancy breads, waffles, pancakes, sandwich breads with lots of steps and kept going. I want to offer you the benefit of my 40 plus years of bread making experience. My starter and process will make you successful with sour dough with a little consistency on your part. Below are the ways to get started.

First Step

Order the $10.00 accidental homesteader dry starter. What makes mine different? I proof every batch so you know you are getting a real live starter. I dry my starter in a commercial dehydrator at 85F to assure that it will be active when you rehydrate. I blend into small pieces to allow easier rehydration and consistent growth you can see with 2-3 days. I send simple and easy directions that are easy to follow. I include simple and easy troubleshooting on the back side of the directions.

Next Step

When you receive your starter, Start the rehydration process following the simple and easy directions. Be patient and trust the directions and it will start to bubble and become a beautiful active sourdough starter. Now What? Use my master simple and easy recipe on this blog.
