Simple and easy doesn't always go as planned.

We had missed last week and her schedule wouldn't allow for scratch Wednesday.this week. We looked at our calenders, Today was the only day. She would bring her four year old niece to make this work. I was getting ready to head out the door for my Monday morning in Bishop. I hadn't planned anything and had to think on my feet.

I decided we would make hamburger buns using sourdough starter, instant pot shredded Taco beef, and plant a hanging herb garden for Jen to take.

When I got home from Bishop I mixed up bread dough in my kitchen aid. I used my master recipe and added 1/2 T active dry yeast to my lukewarm water to aid in a faster rise. I ended up adding about 3/4 C additional flour at the end to make the dough come together. Later, I realized I had not added the salt. Sometimes things just don't go as planned.

The link is a short of my mixer making and kneading the dough.

I put the dough in my dehydrator to proof at 85 degrees. Hoping the warmer environment would speed up the rise. I left it in there until the last moment. I really didn't have time for a proper rise in which the bulk doubles.

Then Jen rolled out the dough and cut hamburger buns. We let rise while we played in the greenhouse and looked at the worm castle. Again I didn't allow quite enough time for the rise.

We baked at 375 for about 30 minutes.

Instant pot shredded Taco beef. I tried to hurry it, Hoping it would be ready to shred after 45 min at high pressure. Haha I knew better from frozem takes 60-90 minutes. Jen ended up going home without the shredded beef. Sad as after cooking forever on the stovetop it was delicious.

Things do not go as planned but it is still possible to bake from scratch without days of prep. It might not have been my most successful scratch Wednesday (on Monday). I prefer long rise sourdough for taste, texture, and nutritional value. I do think Jen learned some new skills. She could tell the difference in the dough consistency and learned how to make hamburger buns. Her little niece loved the worms and bunnies. Some days things just do not go as planned. Jen still had fun homemade burger buns to take home as well as a brand new herb planter for her porch. All in all everyday no matter the results is a learning experience to learn and grow from.
